The Tire Pressure Monitoring System, commonly known as TPMS, helps monitor the air pressure in tires. Its purpose is to alert you when tires are underinflated. An alert from the TPMS contributes to a higher degree of safety for drivers, passengers, and anyone else within the driving area. It gives you an opportunity to pull off the road or take an exit to get somewhere safe in the event a hazard has created one or more flats. The TPMS light may also turn on if tires are low due to temperature changes. In the event the warning light repeatedly turns on not long after correcting the pressure levels, it can indicate that there is a a slow leak or tiny puncture that would be difficult to know about otherwise.
Tire pressure contributes to the overall handling and safety of a vehicle, so it's important to keep all tires within the right pressure levels. When tires are under-inflated, it results in decreased traction, reduced stability, and longer braking distances.
There are two types of TPMS systems: direct and indirect.
1. Direct TPMS: This system uses tire pressure sensors mounted inside each tire that directly measure the air pressure. These sensors transmit the tire pressure information to the vehicle's computer system, which alerts the driver through a dashboard display or warning light if the tire pressure drops below the recommended level.
2. Indirect TPMS: This system indirectly measures tire pressure by monitoring the wheel speed and other parameters to detect abnormalities in tire rotation. It uses the vehicle's Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) sensors to compare the rotational speed of individual wheels. If there is a significant difference in wheel speed, it indicates a tire pressure issue.
